Post-Operative Instructions

Following pre-operative instructions is an important part of ensuring a smooth procedure and an easier recovery. The guidelines may vary depending on the type of treatment you are scheduled for, but most dental surgeries at our office are performed using local anesthetic only.

Your dentist will provide you with specific instructions tailored to your procedure. Following these directions closely will help you feel more comfortable and support proper healing.

Gentle Guidance for a Smooth Recovery

These are general post-surgery care instructions from Twin City Smiles Family Dentistry. Every patient heals a little differently, so if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact our office. When in doubt, follow these guidelines — and use common sense as your best guide.

The First Hour After Surgery

  • Bite down firmly but gently on the gauze placed over your surgical area for 30 minutes.

  • Replace the gauze with clean pieces as needed, or use a damp tea bag if bleeding continues.

  • Do not eat, drink, or sleep with gauze in your mouth.

If heavy bleeding continues:

  1. Remove the gauze.

  2. Reposition clean gauze or a moistened tea bag directly over the bleeding site.

  3. Apply firm pressure for 30–60 minutes.

Bleeding and Oozing

Some light oozing is normal for the first 24 hours, and may last longer if you’re taking blood thinners.

  • It’s normal for your saliva to appear pink — that doesn’t mean you’re bleeding heavily.

  • Follow the gauze instructions above if needed.

  • Never sleep with gauze in your mouth.

Pain Management

Most oral surgeries cause some level of discomfort.

  • Take your first dose of pain medication before the numbness wears off.

  • Ibuprofen (Advil® or Motrin®) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol®) are usually sufficient unless a stronger medication is prescribed.

  • You may alternate or combine these medications safely if directed.

  • Take medications with food to avoid nausea.

Do not drive or operate machinery while taking narcotic pain medication — it can impair judgment and reflexes.
